Our Lady of the Rocks

Our Lady of the Rocks is an iconic religious site located near the town of Perast in Montenegro. It is an artificial island situated in the Bay of Kotor and holds significant religious and cultural importance.

The creation of Our Lady of the Rocks dates back to the 15th century. According to local legend, two fishermen found an icon of the Virgin Mary on a rock in the sea. They believed it was a sign and began placing stones in the same spot each time they returned from successful fishing trips. Over time, this tradition continued, and the island gradually emerged.

The island features a stunning Catholic church known as the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela). The church is predominantly Baroque in style, with beautiful artwork and intricate decorations. The interior is adorned with numerous religious artifacts, including paintings and votive offerings, reflecting the maritime heritage of the region.

Every year on July 22nd, the locals celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rocks with a procession of boats, called “Fasinada.” During this event, local residents and visitors gather to throw more stones around the island, further extending its surface. It is a unique and festive tradition that has been celebrated for centuries.

Visiting Our Lady of the Rocks is a popular tourist activity in Montenegro. Many people take boat tours to the island, exploring the church and enjoying the scenic views of the Bay of Kotor. The site holds both religious and historical significance and is a testament to the deep-rooted traditions and culture of the region.
